For the better part of a decade, co-owners and partners Shea and Yvonne Ashbee and John and Danielle Tam have built their friendship over a passion and love for board games and great food. In fact, the Ashbees themed their wedding around board games! With the digital age taking over interaction and communication and true connection falling by the wayside, the Tams and Ashbees found that board games allowed them to escape the distractions of the everyday grind and provide a way to really start to get to know each other. As the collections grew so did the game group.

Although the the idea for a board game cafe is no longer new, Calgary has yet to see its first one. Pips Board Game Cafe is the answer to bringing gamers and dormant gamers out to a place they can call their own. Guests coming to Pips will have access to a library of over 500 games. That may prove daunting so we’ll have knowledgeable staff and “game masters” that will get a sense of your time frame, experiences and interests to recommend and get you started on a game. Don’t worry though, you’ll still see some of your childhood favourites that you grew up with. Mixed in with Monopoly, Scrabble and Sorry are new age favorites like Catan, Ticket to Ride, and Pandemic. If you’re short on time, grab a quick game of Love Letter, No Thanks or Sushi Go.

While you start making board game memories with family and friends you can enjoy locally roasted coffee from Rosso and an assortment of hot and cold drinks. Being fully licensed, you can also choose from Craft beers from local microbreweries and a select wine list. To top it off, Pips has a bistro menu to satisfy any palate. From a carefully selected assortment of snacks, comfort foods like Mac and Cheese and pot pies to shareable options and exceptional flat breads, there is truly something for everyone. Gluten free and vegetarian options will also be available. So put down the phones, tablets and laptops and get back to being social and interactive in a place where you can ‘play WITH your food.’
